The College of Health Sciences (CHS) successfully organized an informative and inspiring event, the “CHS Panel Discussion – Career paths in healthcare industry,” on April 22, 2023. The event was attended by around 80 participants, including students, faculty and staff from the College of Health Sciences, and other guests. The event was aimed at providing valuable insights to Medical Doctor (MD) and Bachelor of Nursing (BN) students on how to prepare for their careers after graduation and navigate the healthcare industry. The event consisted of two sessions: the Moderated Panel Discussion and the Career Roundtable Mentoring.

The Panel Discussion is chaired by Prof. Le Van Phuoc, Vice Dean of Medical Education of CHS with the involvement of 05 distinguished panelists, including Ms. Celina Eves, Group Chief Nursing Officer, Vinmec Healthcare System; Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Quang, Chief Medical Officer, Vinmec Times City Hospital; Prof. Lam Khanh, Deputy Director, Military Central Hospital 108; Dr. Vu Song Ha, Deputy Director, Creative Initiatives in Health, and Population (CCIHP); and Dr. Nguyen Hoang Kim Han, Internal Medicine Resident, VinUniversity. The panelists provided valuable insights on learning experiences, necessary soft skills, opportunities and development roadmaps for young doctors and nurses in private, public hospitals and NGOs.

Following the panel discussion, the students had the opportunity to participate in the Career Roundtable Mentoring session. The session featured 14 mentors from different specialties, including research, internal medicine, surgery, nursing practice, nursing management, and NGOs. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and seek career counseling and mentoring from multiple experts, gaining a better understanding of their chosen career path.

The event was a great success, and the level of engagement and enthusiasm from both the panelists and students was impressive. The event provided the students with the necessary information to prepare well for their chosen careers. Hannah Yeboah, a 2nd-year BN student, shared her experience at the roundtable mentoring session, where she established a good relationship with nursing experts from Vinmec, who shared great advice and wisdom as nurse leaders. The experts also shared how ethical dilemmas are always involved in a lot of decision-making, especially in the oncology and cardiovascular departments. The experience with medical procedure errors taught her to be very vigilant when undergoing any medical procedure for her patients in the future.

In conclusion, the “CHS Panel Discussion – Career paths in healthcare industry” was an informative and inspiring event that provided valuable insights into the healthcare industry. The students felt more confident for their coming post-graduation plans and they know how to prepare for it as well as possible. They also know that the leaders and lecturers of CHS are always willing to support and mentor them at any time. The event was a great success, and CHS hopes to host more similar events in the future to continue to support and prepare their students for successful careers in the healthcare industry.
