Reserved and introverted, Bui Nguyen Huu An fell victim to his own peers’ bullying during his childhood. “You have 2 options: transit to another school or learn to defend yourself” – An’s mom told him. Refusing to either give up or keep running away, An decided to sign up for a Karate class.
Subsequently, An scheduled himself for the martial art and physical self-trainings. He took on morning jogging to improve his strength and spent evenings on martial art practice. The high-intensity strength trainings and karate matches consequently made An’s body ache, but the idea of giving up has never shadowed his mind even once. All the sweat and tears from the hard work of An’s trainings eventually paid off when he attained the Karate Back Belt rank at such a young age of a 5th-grader. He carried on to achieve the gold medal of the District’s Karate Competition in his 9th grade.
However, it was probably An’s courage to stand up against his bullies and to protect the more vulnerable that means a true accomplishment to him. Holding a strong belief in martial art training’ advantages of enhancing strength, increasing stamina as well as boosting personal determination and confidence, An aspires to develop a martial art community in Vietnam for a more expansive popularization of martial art practice and self-defense for everyone. He is currently preparing to give karate classes and instructions on self-defense techniques to young kids in his neighborhood.
In addition to martial art, An also has a passion for chess. He got his Gold Medal for Chess in the city’s Phù Đổng Festival of Sports Games. Chess, as in An’s personal opinion, has trained his calculation skill for significantly improved decision making.
Having impressed the Admission Council with his exceptional logic thinking and creativity, An won himself a Scholarship for 90% tuition fee grant from College of Engineering and Computer Science, VinUniversity. As a former student from High School for The Gifted (Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City), An had expressed his strong interest in Mathematics and Physics since a very young age. Besides winning the First Prize in Ho Chi Minh city’s Mathematics Olympiad, he had also given tutoring to more than 20 junior high school students to help grow the fascination of Mathematics in younger kids. For his students’ stronger foundation of Mathematics knowledge, An prepared his own Mathematics questions and practice quizzes for each tutoring session, given thorough instructions on theories as well as applied multiple solution alternatives to each quiz and manually correcting each student’s mistake.
Speaking of future plans, An wishes to build a technology-integrated online platform to spread the passion for Maths to people from all corners of Vietnam.
May An have countless exciting and meaningful experiences at VinUniversity to realize his dreams!
