Phan Thi Hien Chi
90% Scholarship, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
Recipient of First Prize in Vietnam Science and Engineering Fair with Project “Deep Love” – applying deep learning to optimize cancer diagnosis procedures
“My dream is to become a scientist specialized in Computer Science – Biology and apply technology to help patients in Vietnam and other developing countries”, said Hien Chi – recipient of the 90% Scholarship for the Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
Having gained exposure to computers at a young age, Chi started developing an interest in this field. Growing up, Chi became a specialized student in Computer Science at high school, further fuelling her passion for this subject. Outside of school, Hien Chi conducted self-research and accumulated knowledge in algorithm and programming languages through online courses. The more she studied, the more she fell in love and realized that technology might be the key to solve many challenging questions, especially in healthcare.
During the summer of 2019, Hien Chi and her friend developed the “Deep Love” project with the goal of optimizing cancer diagnosis procedures. More specifically, “Deep Love” utilizes deep learning to analyze lymp node biopsy samples and, from that, able diagnose metastatic cancer. In order to create “Deep Love”, Chi and her friend spent months conducting research, collecting and analyzing data as well as consulting various doctors to test the program on actual data. Finally, after one year, Project “Deep Love” was concluded and brought Chi 3 First Prizes in the Provincial Science and Engineering Competition (2019), National Science and Engineering Competition (2020) and the Provincial Youth Innovation Competition (2020). Additionally, with “Deep Love”, Hien Chi received the honor of being 1 of 37 notable creator/ group of creators in the nation to receive a Certificate of Merit from the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.
Discussing her project’s name, Chi shared that “Deep Love” is a combination of Deep learning and the passionate love of a girl for technology and life. Chi believes that her passion for technology and desire to protect people’s lives will become the driving force to help her bring more values to society and live a meaningful life.
As a Vietnamese citizen, Hien Chi shared that she is very proud of VinUniversity. Watching the school’s first commencement ceremony on Youtube, Chi cannot help but be touched at the sight of the Vietnamese flag flying and the Vietnamese anthem playing at a world-class university – something that seemed so far away. Impressed with the oaths made by VinUniversity’s students, Hien Chi are more motivated to join the talented student community here, in order to continue develop and identify opportunities to contribute to society.
VinUniversity is focused on a cross-subject approach for its students. Thus, students of the College of Health Sciences, College of Engineering and Computer Science and College of Business and Management are encouraged and facilitated to collaborate in cross-subject research projects, incubate ideas and products that bring practical values to society.
