The journey after graduation isn’t a destination – It’s a path of self-discovery (part 2)

April 4, 2025

After an inspiring sharing session with VinUni alumni at the webinar Behind the Scenes: Alumni Career last weekend, here are some practical insights from their nearly one-year journey in the workforce. Let’s take a look at some interesting takeaways!

1. Transitioning from university to professional work requires you to become more independent, and at times, it can be confusing because you might not always know what to do. Therefore, take every opportunity to work and ask as many questions as you can to gain real-world experience and a better understanding of the professional environment.

2. There are numerous opportunities after graduation, but the key is to consider available opportunities, industry trends, and emerging sectors. Be proactive by reaching out to HR departments of companies to learn about available opportunities and potential career paths.

3. As long as you approach everything with intention and stay proactive in your personal development, no matter what position you’re in, you’ll always have the opportunity to learn and grow.

4. Take advantage of university events like Career Day by preparing thoroughly and researching the companies you’re interested in beforehand. Engage with companies to make a positive impression and network. This proactive approach may lead to special offers or new opportunities.

5. Communication and networking are key to working and adapting in an international environment. Start by identifying communication habits and understanding what you need to improve your communication skills. Set goals and actionable items to adapt and build stronger connections in a diverse environment.

6. The key is to be proactive and make things happen. We do things right, it’s great. We make mistakes, learn and improve. That’s a way to grow.

7. Two steps to identify and take advantage of career opportunities while still in university:

  • Identify what you are truly interested in.
  • Leverage your network (with peers, mentors, instructors, or relationships/ opportunities that the university provides)

8. Opportunity is not just a “good chance”; it’s when preparation meets possibilities. Whether we’re preparing to tackle a challenge or utilize a good occasion, the result is the same – we move forward. So, focus on the present, take action and carve your path.

9. Career Day presents a valuable chance for students to directly engage with companies, learn about various roles, and explore what these positions entail. Additionally, make use of Career Services—it’s a fantastic resource to help you grow and uncover your potential. The better prepared you are, the more choices you’ll have to find the right job for you.

10. At VinUni, students are provided with a great environment in terms of facilities, networks, and opportunities. It’s essential to fully leverage these resources to grow and discover the career path that suits you.

11. Transferable skills (e.g., communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, etc.) are just as important as technical skills because they can be applied across various fields. At VinUni, you can definitely enhance these skills through courses (like the Agile Innovation class) and learning methods such as group work and active learning.

12. Nursing offers a wide range of career paths, so choose a specialty that you’re passionate about and one that allows for continuous learning and growth in the future.

13. Just try! Try everything you’re passionate about because life offers plenty of room for trial and error. The more experience you gain, the more fresh ideas you’ll bring. Just stay confident and keep trying.
