VinUni’s Diversity of Majors Contributes to an Innovative and Creative Environment
“VinUni gathers many talented and progressive students in different fields together. Instead of specializing in only one (either business, technology, or medicine), VinUni has training programs in all three areas. Thus, I got a chance to get to know and learn more from my friends at college. The diversity of majors also contributes to creating an innovative and creative environment.” – shares Tran Tuan Minh, a second-year student of Business Administration, about what makes him love and proud of the university he is attending.
As the co-founder and president of UpYouth – a non-profit organization that helps young people establish and develop technology startups, Tuan Minh said he has received great assistance from VinUni to pursue his dream since freshman year: “All the professors, leaders of departments, especially the University President and VinUni Startup Center – E Lab, have given us invaluable guidance along with resources to build a startup incubator in less than a year.”
UpYouth’s recent “TechYouth Startup Day” event to launch the first startup incubator has attracted the participation of more than 20 leaders of corporations, businesses, press agencies, Vietnam Television, and over 700 young people nationwide. UpYouth’s Startup Incubator Program is currently supporting 15 startup projects both inside and outside of VinUni.
Leading a young startup with members from 8 different countries and many projects in parallel with a limited time budget of 24 hours a day, Tuan Minh has learned the “indirect management and leadership” skills with 3 rules to manage time and goals effectively:
“First, divide projects in terms of importance/unimportance and those that need me/don’t need me to be successful. Second, try to put the right person in the right job, and if it goes wrong, go into the details to fix it. Lastly, create an environment for everyone to learn and develop together; the management will be more effective if every member can improve their skills and knowledge.”
In the next school year, aside from continuing to develop UpYouth, his work, and academic results, Tuan Minh wishes to participate in more extracurricular activities at VinUni. That is also the advice Tuan Minh wants to give to new students: “Study hard, play hard! Do what you want, so you won’t regret it when you look back.”
