Vingroup’s vision is to build a world-class university in Vietnam. Over the past five years, VinUni has invested more than VND 3,000 billion in infrastructure, two research institutes, four centers, and a series of internationally standardized laboratories. These efforts focus on six interdisciplinary fields: Biomedical Sciences & Precision Medicine, Mathematics & Artificial Intelligence, Automation & Robotics, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Environment & Energy, and Innovation.

VinUni boasts a compact team of over 100 faculty members and researchers from 12 countries, including eight scientists ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited researchers. Despite being a young institution, VinUni has demonstrated high research productivity, with over 800 publications in ISI/Scopus-indexed journals. Notably, 61% of these publications are in Q1/Q2 journals, featuring pioneering works in artificial intelligence, medicine, and telecommunications.

Each year, VinUni allocates up to VND 150 million per scientist for personal development, which can be used for attending conferences, hiring research assistants, or purchasing research equipment. Faculty members can also apply for seed funding from VinUni’s Research & Innovation Fund, with an annual budget of up to VND 50 billion.

Should projects show strong potential, faculty members can secure additional funding of up to VND 6 billion per project from the university’s research centers, such as the Smart Health Center, Environmental Intelligence Center, Stem Cell and Gene Technology Research Institute, and the Immunology Research Institute.

VinUni actively encourages the formation of research groups that collaborate closely with leading scientists worldwide, including Nobel laureates and VinFuture Prize winners. The university also connects with the business ecosystem and local authorities to conduct highly innovative research that makes a significant real-world impact.

Thanks to comprehensive policies, VinUni has fostered a dynamic and practical research environment. Notable projects include:

  • Farm2Vet: Developing a digital veterinary platform featuring VetBot with AI applications, helping farmers reduce antibiotic use and enhance food safety.
  • EQIS: Standardizing medical care and improving maternal, child, and cardiovascular healthcare nationwide.
  • Smart Charging: Advancing electric vehicle charging technology that integrates renewable energy and digital twin models, contributing to Vietnam’s NetZero 2050 goals.

Prof. David Bangsberg, President of VinUni, stated that the university’s growth demonstrates that Vietnam can achieve world-class standards at an impressive pace and quality.

“Over the next five years, we aim to become an entrepreneurial and innovative university, ranked among the world’s top institutions, and a hub for global tech scientists and talents,” he emphasized.

Dr. Le Mai Lan, Chairwoman of VinUni’s University Council, also affirmed VinUni’s commitment to making significant breakthroughs in research, particularly in digital technology, environmental technology, smart cities, and smart health.

According to her, VinUni’s new strategic direction emphasizes an “open science” spirit, where talented scientists with a passion for serving humanity can collaborate with the university without necessarily being formal employees. With VinUni’s supportive environment, resources, and policies, these collaborations are expected to contribute to Vietnam’s vision of becoming a high-income developed country by 2045.

“In our Vision 2030 announcement, VinUni aspires to become an entrepreneurial and innovative university, determined to be among the world’s top universities,” she added.

To realize these goals, Vingroup will continue to invest in five major strategic programs at VinUni, including:

  • VinUni 5,000 Talented Students: Attracting young global talents.
  • 100 Sci-Tech Innovators Connect: Connecting 100 outstanding science and technology innovators.
  • 100 Sci-Tech Experiments: Piloting 100 scientific and technological initiatives.
  • RISE Centers: Establishing centers of research excellence.
  • Innovation Hub: Building an ecosystem for entrepreneurship and innovation.

With these efforts, VinUni has become the youngest and fastest university globally to achieve comprehensive QS 5-star certification—transforming from a blueprint on paper to a world-class institution within just five years.
