On May 8, VinUniversity hosted senior delegations from the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) for a series of strategic discussions. Following VinUni’s recent induction into this prestigious network, the visit served as a platform to align institutional visions and identify concrete pathways for international collaboration.

Aligning Visions: The Aspiration to Become Vietnam’s Flagship University
During the leadership sessions, VinUni openly expressed a desire to learn from well-established APRU members to help build capacity and develop into a true “flagship university” for Vietnam. APRU representatives emphasized that the network acts as a “neutral ground” and a supportive family, making it significantly easier for a new university to establish international research contacts and collaborations.

“The excitement is really great about having VinUniversity as a member because we think the institution provides so much momentum and energy that can really resonate with the purpose of the entire association.” – Professor Thomas Schneider, Chief Executive of APRU
A key focus of the discussion was how VinUni joins APRU not just to learn as a new member, but can bring very practical Vietnamese challenges into regional academic dialogues. VinUni currently manages massive amounts of practical data from its work, including but not limited to:
- Sustainable Smart Cities: Master plans for urban development.
- Green Transformation: Practical strategies for the transition to electric vehicles and clean energy.
- Global Health: Digital health records of patients and genomic data.
- AI Empowerment: Implementing AI to drive social impact and innovation.
VinUni seeks APRU’s guidance on better translating this extensive data into highly visible, translational academic research that can contribute to the global community. As a young and agile university connected to one of Vietnam’s largest multi-sector ecosystems, VinUni is positioned at the intersection of academia, industry, and national transformation. Through access to real-world implementation environments, large-scale operational data, and cross-sector partnerships, the university aims to help translate emerging challenges into research with regional and global relevance.
The two groups also discussed future engagements across APRU programs such as Sustainable Cities and Landscapes, Global Health, and Indigenous Knowledge. Notably, APRU specifically invited VinUni to join the Asia-Pacific Women in Leadership program, recognizing the university’s strong female leadership presence.
Academic Synergy: The “Speedboat” Advantage
During the discussion session with academics and research teams, both sides emphasized that active involvement from the academic community is essential to translate VinUni’s membership into tangible benefits and collaborative research. VinUni delegates outlined key areas where their faculty are ready to contribute, including Global Health, Art & Sciences, Green Transformation and Sustainability,…

APRU leaders compared VinUni’s agility as a young institution to a “speedboat” – capable of quick decision-making and rapid innovation compared to older, traditional universities. Consequently, APRU invited VinUni not just to participate in existing frameworks, but to propose new initiatives and eventually host major thematic conferences.
VinUni’s unique contribution: Bridging academic research and real-world implementation
VinUni brings a uniquely integrated model to the association, anchored by its strategic position within the Vingroup ecosystem. This foundation enables deep industry integration, featuring strategic industry partners who help ensure that academic work is always professionally ready and grounded in market needs. Furthermore, the university serves as a catalyst for nation-scale transformation by providing direct access to implementation. For instance, the Smart Green Transformation Center (GREEN-X) is already formulating sustainable master plans for several Vietnamese provinces, effectively turning research into immediate public policy. By bringing these real-world Vietnamese challenges into regional academic dialogues, VinUni is ensuring that the next generation of leaders is equipped to drive meaningful, scalable change across the Asia-Pacific.

Despite being a member for only two months, VinUni has already established itself as a proactive contributor within the network. Our leadership is set to take the stage at APRU’s upcoming APEC University Leaders Forum and Annual Presidents’ Meeting, while our faculty are already serving as facilitators and coordinators for APRU certificates in Global Aging and Climate Change Leadership. Furthermore, our students are gaining international exposure through the APRU Undergraduate Leaders’ Program and the APRU Open Dialogues, ensuring that the next generation of Vietnamese leaders is deeply connected to the global academic community.
The visit concluded with a clear roadmap for the future: utilizing the APRU network to amplify VinUni’s research impact and bringing Vietnamese innovation to the forefront of the Asia-Pacific region.
