Trước khi công tác tại VinUni, GS.TS. Wray Buntine là giám đốc thành lập chương trình Thạc sĩ Khoa học Dữ liệu và giám đốc Nhóm Máy học tại Đại học Monash. Trước đây, ông thực hiện nhiều dự án nghiên cứu tại Viện Công nghệ Thông tin Helsinki, Trung tâm Nghiên cứu Ames của NASA, Đại học California, Berkeley và Google. Vào những năm 90, ông đã tham gia vào một số công ty khởi nghiệp ở cả Thung lũng Silicon và Phố Wall.
GS.TS. Wray được biết đến với các công trình lý thuyết và ứng dụng, cũng như ứng dụng phương pháp xác suất để phân tích tài liệu và văn bản, mạng xã hội, khai thác dữ liệu và học máy. Ông là thành viên của một số ban biên tập tạp chí, từng là thành viên ủy ban cấp cao của các hội nghị hàng đầu như IJCAI, UAI, AAAI, EMNLP, ICLR, ACML và NeurIPS. Ông có hơn 200 ấn phẩm học thuật, một số sản phẩm phần mềm và hai bằng sáng chế.
