The first graduating class of VinUni’s residency program
This event marks an important milestone in the journey of a four-year, in-depth, and comprehensive residency training program, which is the first of its kind in Vietnam, based on international standards.
The first graduating class (2020 – 2024) consists of 15 residents specializing in two main fields: General Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. This is the first time in Vietnam that residents have been trained entirely according to a competency-based medical education (CBME) model, aligned with the highest international standards set by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-International (ACGME-I).

With a strong aspiration for innovation and excellence in education, VinUni has, from the very beginning, strategically collaborated with the world-renowned University of Pennsylvania to design and implement the residency program based on the principles of ACGME-I accreditation.
To become a resident at VinUni, candidates must pass three highly stringent rounds of selection, with comprehensive assessments covering medical knowledge and clinical skills. Throughout their studies and practical training, residents receive regular feedback from clinical faculty and continuous evaluations through patient examination and treatment at practice hospitals such as Vinmec Healthcare System, the National Children’s Hospital, and the 108 Military Central Hospital.
This process helps residents continuously improve and perfect their skills, ensuring they are ready to meet the demands of modern medicine.

“VinUni’s achievement in obtaining ACGME-I accreditation at both the institutional and program levels is significant not only for the university but also for the country. Although we have been implementing residency training for many years, this is the first time a medical education institution in Vietnam has received this accreditation. The Ministry of Health recognizes this as an advanced model, which is highly encouraging and contributes to the reform of medical education in Vietnam,” shared Dr. Nguyen Ngo Quang, Director of the Department of Science, Technology, and Training at the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Quang also expressed hope that the new VinUni graduates will make significant contributions to improving healthcare service quality and become future leaders in healthcare systems.

The first graduating class of residents at VinUni has achieved outstanding results. All of them have met the competency standards for independent practice in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics according to ACGME-I accreditation. All residents in the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics programs have undergone international clinical internships at hospitals affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania (USA) or at the University of Vienna Medical School (Austria) under a program sponsored by the Open Medical Institute (OMI).
All have also participated in advanced training courses in Austria organized by OMI, with many residents winning prestigious awards, such as Excellent Academic Achievement and Best Case Presentation. Additionally, the first cohort of residents has published 12 international research papers, with 4 more in the process of being published, and 17 research presentations at national and international medical conferences.

During their studies, all first-year residents were fully funded for their training costs and received monthly living allowances. After graduation, 100% of the residents will be guaranteed employment at the Vinmec Healthcare System. Competitive salaries and a modern working environment at Vinmec will provide many career development opportunities for the new residents, while also allowing them to continue contributing to the public healthcare sector.

Dr. David Bangsberg, Provost of VinUni and Dean of the College of Health Sciences, stated: “This graduation ceremony is a clear demonstration of our commitment to achieving excellence in medical education and our mission to enhance healthcare quality in Vietnam and internationally.”
The residency program is a crucial stage for young doctors, helping them not only solidify their knowledge but also develop comprehensive clinical skills. The graduation of the first class of residents, trained according to international competency-based standards, is not only a source of pride for VinUni but also a clear testament to the university’s determination and strategic vision in building and developing a world-class medical education program in Vietnam.
In the coming period, VinUni plans to continue investing in and expanding the residency program, broadening the range of specialties offered, and attracting talented young doctors from across the country.
