Biography

Prof. Mai Thanh Phong earned his doctorate degree from Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany. Since joining Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) in 2007, he has made significant contributions to academic leadership and institutional development. For five years, he served as Vice Dean in charge of research and development (R&D) and external relations at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering. During this time, his adept management skills enabled him to serve as the coordinator for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-supported project titled “Capacity Building of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology to Strengthen University-Community Linkage.” Over four years, his dedication to the project ensured its success and strengthened collaboration with the Japanese government under subsequent JICA programs.

In 2009, Prof. Phong led the establishment of the HCMUT-Technology Business Incubator, where he has served as Director. The incubator has been instrumental in fostering high-potential, technology-based entrepreneurs and facilitating the commercialization of research outputs. He has collaborated extensively with the Ministry of Science and Technology to shape policies promoting technological innovation and the development of technology business incubation in Vietnam.

Prof. Phong hold the position of Vice President of HCMUT in 2014, overseeing R&D and external affairs. Since his appointment as President in April 2018, he has continued to guide the university on its path to autonomy with a strategic and forward-looking vision. His leadership has driven transformative change, positioning HCMUT to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
