Nearly 400 Academic Leaders, Experts and Educators from all over the World Gathering at the Teaching and Learning Summit 2022 at VinUniversity

From June 17-18, 2022 in Hanoi, VinUniversity hosts the 1st Annual “Teaching and Learning Summit”. The event focuses on innovation in teaching and learning, with the goal of reshaping Vietnamese higher education in the 21st century. The Summit enjoys the participation of leaders from the Ministry of Education and Training, as well as approximately 400 reputable academic leaders, experts, and educators from leading institutions and universities around the world.

The 1st “Teaching and Learning Summit” held at VinUniversity enjoys the participation of approximately 400 educational leaders around the world, including the University of British Columbia (Canada), Duke-NUS University (Singapore), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), University of Sydney Business School (Australia), Tianjin University (China), etc. From Vietnam, attending are leaders from reputable Vietnamese university, such as the Vietnam National University Hanoi, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, HCMC University of Science and Technology – Vietnam National University HCMC, National Economics University, Foreign Trade University, HCMC University of Medicine & Pharmacy, Hanoi University of Medicine, among others.

The Summit is held across 2 days with a keynote address on “Education in the 21st Century” by Prof. Sanjay Sarma, Vice-President for Open Learning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). According to Prof. Sanjay, the world is constantly changing and today’s students must face difficult challenges of the future. MIT has proposed an innovative approach to education using open learning and technology as ways of improving curricula and teaching methods, thereby preparing students for a challenging post-COVID world as well as new opportunities for start-ups and technology transfer.

The following sessions are chaired by experts, with multi-faceted and in-depth discussions. The Summit discusses global experiences in group-based learning, project-based learning, experiential learning, etc., and how to apply these methods in Vietnam. The Summit also proposes new and potential teaching trends, such as research as a teaching element, entrepreneurship education, self-directed learning, or online learning ecosystem.

The second day of the Summit features panel discussions on Medical Education chaired by Prof. Le Quang Cuong, Standing Deputy Chairman of the National Medical Council, and Prof. Maurizio Trevisan, Dean of the VinUniversity College of Health Sciences. The Summit will provide a comprehensive picture of the evolution of medical education in Vietnam and introduce the latest teaching methods – simulation, group-based teaching, teaching specific skills, and immersive learning activities. Notably, delegates will have the chance to observe and assess the effectiveness of these teaching methods during the simulation demonstration.

A key activity in the Summit is the High-level Roundtable between leaders of universities, focusing on 5 themes: (1) Digital transformation in Higher Education, (2) Equality in education; (3) Social responsibilities of universities; (4) Connecting higher education, continuing education and general education, and (5) The role of higher education in the innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem. Observed by the Ministry of Education and Training, leaders of universities will issue a joint statement on “The leadership role of university in the 21st century” as well as an action plan to realize these common objectives. Held parallel to the Roundtable is the Workshop on assessment and classification of learning organization for higher education institutions hosted by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Discussing the Summit’s goals, Dr. Le Mai Lan, Vice President of Vingroup, and President of VinUniversity shared: “The Annual Learning and Teaching Summit held by VinUniversity hopes to not only create a “level-playing field”, but also provide a platform for discussion and collaboration on the future of education. Through the Summit, academic leaders give a commitment to creating greater changes in education, accelerating student entrepreneurship, and shortening the time lag between research and real-world application.”

The success of the 1st “Teaching and Learning Summit” promises to not only provide networking opportunities for domestic and international academic leaders, but also open up opportunities for cooperation. The 2nd Summit will be hosted by Vietnam National University Hanoi in 2023.
