“I Aspire To Apply Science And Techonology In The Development of Vvietnam’s Agriculture Sector”

At quite an early age, Chu Ha Linh, a Physic-major student at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School For The Gifted always had numerous questions of all the Whys: “Why is the sky blue?”, “Why is rose called “rose”?”, etc. With the kindest patience, Ha Linh’s parents had been wholeheartedly explaining every fact and phenomenon in daily life that comes with her curious questions. This has gradually nurtured and grown her passion in Physics as she grew up.

“I love Physics because it gives me a foundation to explain everything around us”. After the Second Prize in the city’s Physics Olympiad at 9th grade, Ha Linh continue to win the First Prize in the city’s Physics Olympiad (12th grade) and the Third Prize in the National Physics Olympiad (12th grade) at the age of 18. However, beyond the sparkling Olympiad awards is her aching aspiration to contribute to the domestic agriculture sector. Ha Linh has been cherishing this dream since her 8th grade when she first saw documentaries on agricultural science in Israel, where agriculture was described by President Shimon Peres as “95% science and 5% labor”. With most of their surface being dry deserts, the Israeli refuse to give up on the nature’s onerous challenge but even choosing agriculture as the cornerstone for their nation’s development. They implemented soil salinity control methods, invented drip irrigation technology , which soon became the worldwide leading technology of its kind due to the high efficiency and water recycling capability. Harvard University Professor Ricardo Hausmann noted that every nation has its own challenges and limitations but the astounding thing about Israel is their approach to difficult situations: turning obstacles into opportunities, using their people’s intellectuality as the core motivating factor for development.

Reflecting on Vietnam’s agriculture story, Ha Linh realized that we had been much fortunate than Israel with substantial natural abundance in terms of climate and soil condition in favor of cultivation and farming of fruit trees. Despite the recent produce quantity and quality increment, Vietnam is facing the challenges of climate change, saltwater intrusion , etc, and in dire need of science and technology breakthrough in agriculture. Therefore, with a boundless passion for scientific research as well as a wholehearted love for planting and gardening, Ha Linh wishes to devote all her best efforts to improve agricultural productivity and post-harvest storage techniques. “It’s the only way for farmers to keep their income more stable and less depending on seasonality and climate. End-consumers like us will also benefit from less price fluctuation. This helps to boost our domestic GDP overall”.

It is Ha Linh’s logical thinking, creativity and her strong passion to contribute to the community that left a compelling impression on the Admission Council. She deservedly won the 100% Scholarship for Electric Engineering major at College of Engineering and Computer Science, VinUniversity. Sharing advice regarding the application preparing process, Ha Linh emphasizes: “Share your stories, your passions and endeavors with confidence. Please also prove your genuine aspirations to contribute realistic values to the society.”
