60% Fellowship, Medical Doctor
Having graduated with a GPA of 3.94/4 from San Jose Unified School (USA), and having completed Pre-medical degree in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at UC Davis in the US, Bui Vinh Quang – a Vietnamese-American – decided on VinUniversity when choosing where to continue his medical studies. Having lived away from his home country from a young age, his homesickness turned into a desire to contribute, with the idea of coming back home never leaving his mind.
Quang shared that having witnessed his closest relative – his mother – suffer from illness, he dreamed of becoming a doctor so that no one would have to go through the pain and worry that he had to experience. Acting on his dream from his high school days, Quang actively sought out opportunities to observe doctors’ work in order to decide if he was suitable for the profession and to better understand the hardships that came with working in the medical sector.

Until now, Quang has acquired clinical practice experience in private clinics and hospitals in the US, such as Same Day Surgery Center, Ambulatory Care Center, and Occupational Therapy Outpatient. From learning the simplest basics, such as dispensing medicine, visiting and re-examining patients, to interning in the X-ray room, observing real surgeries, and assisting with post-injury physical therapy, he hopes to equip himself with a multifaceted perspective on being a doctor.
“I cherish every opportunity to have face-to-face interactions with patients. When patients place their trust in me and I don’t let them down, mitigating both their physical and mental pain, I feel truly happy and confident in my decision”, Quang expressed regarding his internship experience. At the moment, his goal is to work in Orthopedics, where there is great patient turnover, substantial exposure to a variety of cases, and high chances of actually getting to perform surgery. “Being able to save a person on the verge of death is the reason that many people besides me decide to pursue this profession”.
Going back to his decision to study Medicine at VinUniversity, Quang said that he had given it a lot of thought and preparation. For him, a change in environment will inevitably result in some disadvantages. Above all, Quang understands that becoming a doctor is not a bed of roses, but is rather an arduous journey that begins with studies and progresses to “real-world experience”. Whether in Vietnam or the US, the pressure placed on medical practitioners is never small, so everyone needs determination and strength to overcome their fears and reach their greater goals.
Additionally, looking at the positive impact that VinUniversity and the Vinmec Health System have had on education and healthcare in Vietnam. Quang feels proud to join this system and looks forward to devoting his energy to improving quality of life for Vietnamese people. “My goal is to return to and settle in Vietnam, helping the people of my country. Since coming to the US, I have been thinking of returning one day, and I believe right now is the most appropriate time”, Vinh Quang shared.
