VinUniversity’s student takes part in a research project on Human Action Recognition at NCSA

June 16, 2021

Mai Quang Tuan, an Electrical Engineering freshman at the College of Engineering and Computer Science at VinUniversity has been accepted to an internship program at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), United States. NCSA, operates as a unit of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, provides leading-edge computing, data storage, and visualization resources. The computing and data systems at NCSA have been used to support research in more than 830 projects.

Within the NCSA internship program’s scope, along with students from China and the United States, Tuan will take part in research project on human action recognition, with a focus on emotion-sensing technologies to tell negative feelings and anger from recorded test objects. This technology will subsequently be applied in streets and hospital camera systems to help recognize dangerous threats and enhance public security of the areas under surveillance.

At VinUniversity, Tuan has been highly active towards research projects in the role of research assistant and lab assistant for the course of CECS1020 – Introduction to Machine Learning, delivered by Professor Do Ngoc Minh – Vice Provost of VinUniversity, top 2% influential researchers worldwide (as announced on PLOS Biology journal, United States, 2020). Taking responsibilities of a research assistant, Tuan frequently researched applications of machine learning in health sciences, including Imaging Diagnosis, patient data archive system, epidemic surge prediction, etc. Tuan opened up: “Becoming a research assistant since my first university year has established my strong foundation in computer science in general and machine learning in particular, from which I feel a lot more confident to join future researches in the NCSA”.

Given the scale of the first admission batch of 230 students, the current student-to-faculty ratio at VinUniversity is 6:1 which is an ideal ratio being maintained by many of the world’s leading universities. This advantage has enabled VinUniversity students to easily access more opportunities for orientation, close support and counseling from various Professors and other faculty members towards tailoring their own path for personal growth.

The University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign is among the leading universities of the United States and the world, with its Computer Science major ranking 20th globally in THE World University Rankings. The NCSA, a subsidiary of University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, has made various innovative contributions towards technology advancement in general, including the development of the Mosaic browser in 1993, the first web browser to be popular across different operating systems of Windows, Macintosh and Unix. This is also the web browser platform upon which Netscape and Internet Explorer were developed. In addition, NCSA’s technologies also played crucial roles in the discovery of the comet Hale-Bopp, the most widely observed comet of the 20th century and lately the applied AI and machine learning technology in controlling COVID-19 pandemic and other possible pandemics in the future.

Currently, there are nearly 20 researches being conducted at VinUniversity by our professors and other faculty members with the participation of our first-year students. The #VinUniResearch article series will in turn unfold numerous exciting research topics by our Professor, Faculty members as well as internship and research participation opportunities for VinUniversity students since the very first academic year.
