VinUni faculty nominated for Outstanding Young Faces of Vietnam 2023 

On February 20th, the Central Committee officially announced the 20 outstanding nominees for the online voting round of the “Outstanding Young Faces of Vietnam Award 2023”. Dr. Pham Huy Hieu, an Assistant Professor at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, a Research Fellow cum Associate Director at the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center, and Director of the Entrepreneurship Lab at VinUniversity, is honored to be on the list of 20 nominees. 

According to Tien Phong newspaper, on the afternoon of January 30th in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee and Vietnam Young Talents Assistance Foundation organized the first council meeting to nominate candidates for outstanding young faces of Vietnam 2023. The council conducted a secret vote and selected 20 nominees for the online round.

Outstanding Young Faces of Vietnam Award is a prestigious honor of Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee that recognizes outstanding young individuals under 35 with excellent performances in 10 fields: education; scientific research – innovation; labor and production; business – entrepreneurship; national defense; security; sports; social activities; culture and arts; public administration. From the list of nominees, the organizing committee will select one winner for each field to be awarded during the annual celebration of the founding of Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union on March 26. 

In this year’s award consideration, Dr. Pham Huy Hieu was nominated by VinUniversity and major press agencies including VnExpress, Thanh Nien Newspaper to the award committee. Dr. Hieu is one of three young researchers nominated for the Scientific Research category. His research interests include Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Digital and Smart Healthcare. He is the author and co-author of 50 scientific articles that appeared in prestigious international conferences and journals such as IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing, Nature Scientific Data, Computer Vision and Understanding Image, Neurocomputing, PLOS ONE, Medical Physics, Biomedical Signal Processing and Control, MICCAI, MIDL, ICIP, ICCV, and ACCV.  

Dr. Pham Huy Hieu is honored to be on the list of 20 nominees

Dr. Hieu’s research focuses on leveraging advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and data science technologies to develop low-cost, accessible, and scalable solutions to improve community health. He is recognized as a pioneering young scientist in shaping digital health in Vietnam through research and training activities. His research opens new directions, particularly aimed at solving healthcare and technology problems in Vietnam and for Vietnamese people. Over 10 undergraduate students mentored by Dr. Hieu are participating in graduate internships and research at top universities worldwide. 

Previously, Dr. Hieu has received many major national and international awards such as the ISCN Excellence Awards for outstanding contributions in digital health towards sustainable development; the DAAD Fellows Award 2021 for outstanding young researchers in the field of artificial intelligence.  

In 2023, he was the youngest scientist awarded the Golden Globe Science and Technology Award. Recently, he was honored with the “Faculty of the Year 2023” and “Changemaker Award” by VinUniversity.
