Harnessing Interdisciplinary Research, VinUni and Ho Chi Minh City Join Forces to Accelerate Urban Green Transition Toward a Greener Vietnam

June 30, 2025

In an effort to promote impactful research, education, and knowledge transfer for sustainable development, on June 18, VinUniversity and the Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies (HIDS) co-hosted the scientific workshop “The Ecosystem for the Transition to Electric Two-Wheelers in Ho Chi Minh City.” At the event, the two institutions officially announced their collaboration to implement the “Green Transition for Ho Chi Minh City 2025-2030” initiative, focusing on two strategic pillars: transportation and energy.

The workshop was chaired by Mr. Tran Thanh Binh, Vice President of HIDS; Mr. Nguyen Hong Quan, Director of the Institute for Circular Economy Development, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City; and Ms. Phan Thi Thuc Anh, Director of the VinUni Agile Innovation Center (AIC).

The event created a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue among key players in the ecosystem, including government agencies; vehicle manufacturers and businesses; banks and financial institutions; tech platforms; and research and policy advisory organizations. Discussions focused on defining the roles of each party, assessing their capacity for engagement, identifying real-world challenges, and proposing practical solutions to transition 400,000 gasoline-powered motorbikes used by ride-hailing and delivery drivers to electric vehicles.

As proposed in the workshop roadmap, by 2027, Ho Chi Minh City aims to convert 80% of its two-wheeled ride-hailing fleet – approximately 320,000 vehicles – to electric. This transition is expected to bring clear economic benefits, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, foster digital connectivity, and spark widespread awareness of environmental sustainability across urban communities.

The collaboration between VinUni and HIDS represents a strategic milestone and a strong commitment by VinUni to pioneering the green transition – not only through academic initiatives but also through practical, on-the-ground efforts. By advancing interdisciplinary scientific research and public-private partnership models, VinUni remains dedicated to working alongside communities to build smart cities, sustainable transportation systems, and a greener future for Vietnam.
