Biography
Professor Donnelly completed four years in the medical doctor program at Ha Noi Medical University in Vietnam (1979). She received the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Dalhousie University in Canada (1985), both a Master of Science in Nursing (1998) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Studies (2004) at the University of British Columbia, Canada. She was a Full Professor in the Faculty of Nursing and the Faculty of Medicine (Community Health Sciences) at the University of Calgary, and past Associate Dean for Research and Lead Principal Researcher at the University of Calgary in Qatar (Jan 2009-Dec 2013). Currently, she is a Full Professor at the College of Health Sciences, VinUniversity.
Professor Donnelly has 23 years of experience teaching and leading research in Canada. She has been teaching and supervising Bachelor, Master’s, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows. Professor Donnelly was nominated and received many awards for her excellence in research, teaching, and service. She was also awarded Foreign Expert Scholar Program at the University of South China, Hunan Province, China (2017). Professor Donnelly is an External Reviewer for numerous Faculty Promotion and Tenure committees and high-impact factor international academic journals (i.e. Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ); Social Science & Medicine, British Medical Journal (BMJ), BMC Public Health, BMC Women’s Health, BMC Cancer, BioMed Central, PLOS ONE (reviewer and academic editor), Child Development, Psycho-Oncology, Clinical Cardiology, Cancer Epidemiology, Women & Health, Journal of Immigrant & Refugee Studies, Issues in Mental Health Nursing, International Journal of Nursing Student Scholarship (IJNSS), Ethnicity and Health, American Journal of Preventive Medicine. etc.). Prof. Donnelly also reviews proposals for research grants for research funding agencies (i.e. Ireland Health Research Board Review, Medical Research Council – Research Council United Kingdom (RCUK), Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, the Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation, etc.). Prof. Donnelly serves as an examiner and neutral chair for numerous Master’s and PhD theses/dissertation defenses. She also serves as a Board Member for the University of Calgary’s Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CHREB). On average the CHREB approves 75 new studies per month, or approximately 900 applications per year.
