[Research Seminar] ICT for disaster risk communication in a climate change context – Prof. Caroline Rizza

Seminar Title: ICT for disaster risk communication in a climate change context
Speaker: Caroline Rizza – Assoc. Prof. in Information and Communication Sciences; President of the ISCRAM
Time: Wednesday, July 12, 2023 | 4:00 – 5:00 PM
Venue: C202, VinUniversity & Zoom

 About the Seminar
The occurrence of extreme weather events and natural disasters including previously unscathed areas and the difficulty of containing them, are examples of risks that civil protection players describe as emerging on specific territories. The recurrence and violence of this type of risks and events, exacerbated by global warming, means that work needs to be done both on “breaking with risk management” and on the need to adapt professional and public practices to deal with them. In response to this societal challenge, interdisciplinary approach to crisis management is necessary to embrace technical, social and practitioner stakes and propose relevant and up-to-date solutions. In this presentation, Prof. Rizza will give an overview of the last and interdisciplinary projects she has led with a specific focus on the methodology and significant results. Her objective would be to bring the discussion on potential interdisciplinary projects we could jointly co-design and conduct.

About the Speaker
Caroline Rizza is associate professor in Information and Communication Sciences (I3-Telecom Paris, UMR 9217, IP-Paris); President of the ISCRAM Information System for Crisis Response and Management community (2019-2023); Member of the Mission for Transparency, Information and Participation for All in the Management of Major Risks (Ministry of Ecological Transition, 2021) and of the Strategic Crisis Management in the EU working group (Science Advice for Policy by European Academics).

Research Seminar: Learning for Safety and Control in Dynamical Systems – Dr. Geir E. Dullerud, University of Illinois

About the Seminar In this talk AI-based methods have tremendous potential for impacting the performance of autonomous aerospace and robotic systems. Such systems include drones, ground- and water-based vehicles, and limbed robots for instance. A barrier to the wide deployment of AI-powered methods in such applications is the risk or unpredictability of algorithm performance. In […]

Research Seminar: How Linear Algebra and Optimization Is Useful for Power Industry – Dr. Riadh Zorgati

About the Seminar In this talk, we illustrate how linear algebra and optimization, with continuous or binary variables, is useful for power industry, for example for improving maintenance of power plants or for energy management. Optimization under constraints is a key approach for energy management where we aim at minimizing costs of production while respecting […]
