College of Arts and Sciences

Senior Lecturer in Economics

Biography

Dr. Daniel Barkley earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Irvine, after completing a Graduate Diploma in Operations Research at the London School of Economics and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at UCLA. He has taught economics and statistics at leading institutions, including the University of California (Irvine, San Diego, Riverside), California State University (Fullerton, Long Beach), the University of Cincinnati, the American University of Nigeria, Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth, and Xiamen University in China.

Dr. Barkley is the founder of Economics On The Move (EOTM), a nonprofit dedicated to experiential learning. Through EOTM, he created the “learning by touring” model—taking students into companies such as Toyota Manufacturing, Procter & Gamble, Sony Pictures, the National Bureau of Statistics in Beijing, and the Central Bank of Nigeria to explore how economic theory applies to everyday business and policy.

His research spans productivity and technology adoption in informal manufacturing clusters and gender equity in higher education leadership. His recent NSF-funded study analyzed how university endowments shape the gender pay gap among U.S. university presidents, presented at the International Conference on Gender Research in Portugal.
