Medical Doctor Program with Special Teaching Methods under Student’s View

September 9, 2022

Let’s hear from Dang Toan Thang – a Medicine Doctor student who shared his thoughts about the program and fellow students after the first year!

#1: VinUnians are unbelievably talented and gifted, which makes VinUniversity so special.

“The recent student cohort won so many national and international academic prizes. The rate is one out of five, which is surprisingly high. As for my dormitory room, I was randomly assigned with 7 other friends, 3 out of whom got national prizes and 1 got international prize. Moreover, many students got high IELTS, SAT scores and won many different academic competitions.

VinUnians are also outstanding in building personal brands. They all have different knowledge backgrounds, creating a very unique approach to problem-solving. This is most evident in the school’s Hackathon – an interdisciplinary startup idea contest. Last year’s theme was “Sustainable Tourism in Hoi An”, which seemed irrelevant to a student majoring in Medicine. I, however, still found a way to come up with a solution thanks to my advantage in chemistry: filtering waste oil from hotels and restaurants to make soap. Other ideas also carried personal identities of the students; for example, an AI system for waste-sorting.

At my former university, every time someone asks, “Hey, what are you going to do after graduation?”, the answer is likely to be “I don’t know”. At VinUni, it’s different.

“I will study as a Resident Doctor and then pursue a doctoral degree in Dentistry”, “I will pursue AI research”

Of course, not everyone has a clear direction, but most have a picture of the direction in their minds. Many people have really big dreams, but they don’t just dream. Theyactually plan to make it happen.

#2: Medical training program with different approaches

Before coming to VinUni, Thang was a student at a leading medical university in Vietnam. After having a direct conversation with a professor from the University of Pennsylvania – a strategic partner of VinUni and the co-designer of the Medical program at VinUni, Thang was very surprised. when the professor  shared that: “At VinUni, we focus on training medical thinking and problem-solving skills, instead of forcing students to memorize knowledge that they can google. The program guarantees essential foundational knowledge,  and our approach is somewhat more modern and liberal.”

“Real case-study exercises.

Instructional courses for doing scientific research.

Distinguished lectures from the world’s top professors.

Events and opportunities for early exposure to the medical professional environment.

Interdisciplinary collaboration (computer science, mechanics, medicine, etc.) to solve difficult problems.

All of those have created the style of Medical Doctor program at VinUni.” – Thang shares.
