VinUni Opens Vietnam’s First Research Center For Biomedical 3D Printing

January 10, 2022

VinUniversiry Biomedical 3D printing Research Center is proud to be the first and only center in Vietnam to carry out this type of operation in Vietnam. Optimistic research results promise successful applications in the near future.

3D technology and its wonderful application in Medicine

In today’s technological age, the development of medicine increasingly means absolute precision and personalization. To meet this demand, 3D printing technology, first developed in the 1980s, has been employed in various medical fields, such as bone and cartilage replacement, surgical guides and implants. It, therefore, helps improve the effectiveness of orthopedic surgeries, patients’ post-surgery recovery, and quality of life.

3D printing is a method of creating a three-dimensional object layer-by-layer using a computer created design. Similar to 2D printing, the product is printed using a printer until it forms the final product. 3D printing employs specialized printers and a variety of materials, such as plastic, resin or metal. With this technology, people can create the best-fit bones or implants for replacement surgeries. It can also be used to produce cost-effective and customized models for teaching and research.

The 3D printing process

Vietnam’s first 3D Technology in Medicine Laboratory

Recognizing the potential of this technology, the Biomedical 3D printing Research Center was built to research and apply the world’s latest 3D printing technology in the production of surgical biomedical materials and models.

Through the lab, VinUni students will have the chance to learn and practice on realistic 3D models, giving them a better visual representation compared to old mass-produced models. Students will also have the chance to take part in scientific research and have their work published in reputable academic journals.

That is one of the labs main missions for the next 3 years. Additionally, the lab also aims to:

  • Apply 3D printing technology in the production of surgical guides.
  • Research the application of 3D printing in the production of precise and personalized replacements for patients.
  • Produce surgical models of patients for the purposes of diagnosis and training to prepare for risky and complicated operations, thereby reducing surgery time and risks for patients.

The Biomedical 3D printing Research Center emphasizes investment in the latest technology and equipment, ensuring the effectiveness and sterility of production. The lab attracts leading 3D-printing specialists in the fields of arthroplasty and orthopedics, notably:

Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung – Vietnam’s pioneer in the application of 3D printing technology in bone cancer surgeries. Until now, he has successfully worked on over 1500 cartilage replacement operations, nearly 10.000 arthroscopic surgeries, and over 200 limb-sparing surgeries for bone cancer cases. At the moment, Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung is the Director of the Northern Center for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Vinmec; Chairman of the VinUniversity Orthopedic Department and Director of Biomedical 3D printing Research Center, VinUniversity.

Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung

Dr. Pham Trung Hieu – leading specialist in Orthopedics, with a specialization in hip and knee surgery, foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, and joint surgery. At the moment, Dr. Pham Trung Hieu is the Head of Hip and Pelvis Surgery Department, Center for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Vinmec Times City. He is also a Lecturer in Orthopedics, Vice-Director of Biomedical 3D printing Research Center, VinUniversity.

Dr. Pham Trung Hieu

Dr. Vo Sy Quyen Nang – leading specialist in bone and joint arthroplasty. Trained in Japan and South Korea, he is co-author of many medical textbooks and training materials. He is also the author of many publications in reputable domestic and international science journals. He is currently a Lecturer in Orthopedics, VinUniversity and Head of Knee, Foot & Ankle Surgery Department, Center for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Vinmec Times City.
